Protecting cephalopod populations and marine ecosystems in Greek waters, Greece, 2025-2026
Sea Shepherd Global is an international marine conservation organisation that actively defends the oceans and all marine life.
With a fleet of four sea-going vessels, the organisation carries out direct interventions across the world against illegal fishing,
whaling and other forms of marine destruction.
The Turing Foundation is supporting a campaign in Greece focused on protecting octopus populations and the marine ecosystem
in the Mediterranean by removing illegal octopus traps during the critical breeding season,
when use of such traps is prohibited under Greek law. The campaign is taking place in the Thracian Sea,
in a collaboration between Sea Shepherd and, amongst others, the Greek Coast Guard.
The campaign is building on proven success in Italy, where four years of similar operations resulted
in a 90% reduction in illegally deployed traps.
The Turing Foundation is contributing €100,000 towards this project (of which €50,000 in 2026).
